Can I choose the method myself?
Common surgical options for obesity are the gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass. Which method suits whom depends on certain criteria and cannot be decided by the patient alone. What matters is your weight, any other health conditions and your surgeon's assessment.
Is weight-loss surgery possible if I have heart disease?
Yes. But you should talk to your cardiologist before the operation. Weight-loss surgery can help to improve certain heart-related problems, such as raised blood sugar and blood fats, cholesterol, an enlarged heart and blood vessel disease.
When can I go back to work?
Most people return to work after 10 to 15 days. It depends on your job: if your work is physically demanding, it usually takes longer than if you work at a desk. Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery has advantages here.
Can I eat straight after the operation?
After a gastric sleeve operation, you follow a five-stage eating plan. It supports healing and helps you get used to healthy eating habits. You learn to eat smaller portions more often. In the first two weeks after the operation, you have only clear fluids. This is meant to help prevent problems such as diarrhoea, constipation and severe loss of fluids, and to give your body the time it needs to heal.
When can I start exercising again?
Decide together with your doctor when to start physical activity. Take care in the first month after the operation. Start with gentle walks. Take your time before doing strength or endurance training.
When can I get pregnant after the operation?
Women are advised to wait at least one year after weight-loss surgery before becoming pregnant. During this time the body can build up stores of the vitamins and minerals it needs. A high level of body fat lowers fertility and raises the risk of insulin resistance, ovarian cysts, and high blood pressure and heart problems related to pregnancy. It can also affect the course of the pregnancy and raise the child's risk of being overweight later in life.
How long do I need to take vitamins and minerals?
After the operation you need to take a multivitamin for life. Vitamin D, iron and calcium may need to be taken at higher doses for a time.
Can I put weight back on?
An operation on its own is not a solution. A lasting result depends on a new lifestyle with the recommended eating and exercise habits. If you return to old habits after a few years, you can expect to gain weight again.
